Momentarily streaming the episode about Somali Pirates hijacking a yacht in the Indian Ocean in the era of pirates in 2009–2011-ish. Now pirating has moved to West Africa, South America, and presently with the pandemic going on Asia has shown some concerning reports who unlike Somali pirates have a whole other rationale of why they hijack ships, yachts, boats in which the hijackers believe hold money aboard or they could obtain means from. In those regions it’s more linked to the drug trade, guerrillas, etc as opposed to a direct result of poverty, lack of resources, overfishing by outside corporations leaving the people to starve, and of course the dumping of raw sewage into the regions by sanitation vessels resulting in many diseases, cancers, deformities, and so on due to the essential poisoning of the people of Somalia. I had mentioned this in a past post about maritime piracy prevalent in West Africa, South America, and Asia also because the cultures and religions are different the hijackers tend to be far more violent with often intent to kill those they hijack.

The literary work and adjacent films “Pirates of Somali” as well as “Captain Phillips” not to mention a handful of documentaries cover the issue of piracy in Somalia thoroughly as opposed to passing the usual Westernized or Eurocentric judgements as to why.
