Happy International Day of The Roma
I can’t totally celebrate International Day of the Roma without acknowledging the people from whence the Roma in me came from. The Melungeons of the Appalachia’s. The unspoken of group of American history and not so unlike the Gypsy peoples we are admixed with were very much outcasts of society and highly oppressed. Not genocidal oppressed like Roma but close enough. They were typically dirt poor and honestly were thought of as no more than literal “Mongrels” in a most refined term of the time. In other words we weren’t well liked. Like Roma in and of themselves Melungeons were thought of as dirty and unclean, they carried many of the same burdens of Romichal people which is why they assimilated so well into the Melungeon community. They were mountain people. In the documentary and links all is explained because I’m not going to write it all out just read the FAQ and DNA website 😄
