Passing
I’ve spoken on this aspect before but I’m an ethnically mixed person who absolutely will not pass. I don’t believe in it because for one it’s a big f you to our peoples secondly it’s dumb because lying about who you are for the purpose of deception let alone financial gain like all lies reveal themselves as truth eventually. Thirdly it was invoked and encouraged by oppressive colonalistic eurocentricsm that white is right, the lighter the better, privilege, etc etc. I honestly never thought in the earliest of 2010’s and the 2020's people like myself would have to even make that distinction especially in the era of inclusion. I won’t take any “White” role none period it’s ridiculous because I’m only a quarter Caucasian to begin with. There’s been a long history in America of passing not to mention innumerable true life stories, publications, films, and works of art on it. Because some photos make me appear lighter than in person that doesn’t mean I am, everyone of any lighter complexion of color has those floating around somewhere that doesn’t mean I’m up for Caucasian representation of any kind.

People passed back in the day to avoid lack opportunity, lack of respect, or even safety they passed then so descendants like myself would live in a world we wouldn’t have to. I won’t be doing any ,Imitation of Life, in real time no thank you.

The whole hypothesis of the film was to show what passing does to people, family’s, communities, etc. That is why the story line albeit fiction is quite tragic. Passing destroys and it will return to bite because it’s a dishonest lie just like people that lie that they’re of this background or that background when they’re not or dishonest in general.
