Self Heroism
I have written of the Memoirs of a Geisha film over the years. The lead actress spoke of her playing the role that it was enlightening as to the lack of opportunity for Women in previous eras or in some societies. The fictionalized story is artistic as well as enduring it is art, however it is not reality. In the 2020’s being a Woman that line of thought isn’t autonomous nor functional in the favor of women particularly. A significant chunk of the plot is basically the main character Sayuri awaiting a powerful rich man called, The Chairman, she crossed paths with as a youth to rescue her for lack of a better term. Her entire world is centered on them, with that said that was the position she was placed in being sold to a Geisha house as a 9 year old pre World War II.
Here is the problem in reality with that line of thought and thank God we have more opportunities if you think someone will rescue you in life acting as your hero, you will not be capable of having your own life, standing on your own feet, likely waiting decades of your life for someone to be your hero that likely will never be, and above everything you could be beholden to them for the rest of your life. I’ve written of this previously but that is why I’ve never taken handouts because there is a likelihood they will want something in return. Any success or good fortune will be on account of them not your faith in God, your own competency, or toil but by favors or being pitied. Those positions are typically fleeting and are not long lasting. Waris Dirie a true icon in fashion, a pioneering survivor activist against Female Genital Mutilation, and a child marriage survivor put it like this, “People ask me who is your hero? Me that’s who. I am my own hero.” Heroism from a source not of God and yourself further breeds contempt and envy after awhile. Me, I don’t trust anybody that plays the hero because some of the most nefarious predators will masquerade as the hero in order for their targets to trust them. There is further a line between heroism and enableism of foul behavior which is another post by itself but I will say those sorts of enablers will leave the problem holding the bag when accountability knocks on their door. They won’t show up for those types when there are consequences for their actions.
