Classic great film of the late 80’s early 90’s. I think it was the first adult oriented film by Disney of all entertainment companies to produce it. It has to be said what is portrayed is NOT even an approximate account of “The Life” not even close. It’s unfortunate many Young Girls and Women have spoken of this film “Inspired” them to enter the sex trade thinking it would be something like that only to be hit with the violent bleak reality of that life filled with violence, rape, can have addiction attached to it, and or even death. It’s not a route you want to take in life.
It must be said the film is a fictional and highly romanticized story for entertainment purposes solely, the reality of the life of the sex trade is much darker and frequently more gruesome than that. There is no rich guy that swoops in and pulls those in it out of it or saves you, those guys in reality are often called “Finesse Pimps” hoping to re-exploit for their own profit and or Buyers that leave as soon as they get their sexual kick for however long. It’s a horrible existence in reality. That has to be mentioned because so many have said “I entered the life because I saw Pretty Woman and thought that was how it was.” Therefore I always place a disclaimer to let vulnerable often young people know NO the life is nothing like that. Diane Sawyer hosted an entire docuseries titled “Prostitution In America” in 2008 where the mention of this film came up several times as it often does when speaking with victims or survivors of the sex trade.
That set aside enjoy the film for what it is not the reality it speaks remnants of.
