The Horse Whisperer- Analogy of Post Trauma

I spoke on last night there was a terrific film based on the publication of the same title called “The Horse Whisperer.” Real life horse whisperers exist and do recover horses that have been traumatized and or injured. The works albeit fictional speaks of both trauma of a young Girl who was riding her horse along side a schoolmate when a ghastly accident involving a tractor trailer truck took place in which she was left with an amputated limb, her schoolmate dead, and a traumatized mortally wounded horse that like her somehow survived. A few of the peoples individuals like myself stem from were and are Horse Nation people. Most plains tribes are which is mentioned a bit later as to the involvement with Horse Whispering as well work with Horses generally. I was touching on in the post the works were mentioned it’s very much much akin to real life actual trauma of any nature that alters the life of the traumatized. That is why CPTSD (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) were singularly and rightfully referred to as “Shell Shock” due to the fact the psychological response was diagnosed to war veterans then later it was realized the same symptoms of post trauma affects were also discovered in Child Abuse Survivors, Sexual Violence Survivors, Human-Trafficking Survivors, Gender-Based Violence, Genocide, Severe Accident Survivors, and so on. The original term “Shell Shock” I believe fits the experience of trauma survivors well. I have to agree with George Carlin’s sentiments on the terminology. The dichotomies between CPTSD and PTSD — CPTSD is based on multiple traumatic events as where typically PTSD is based on a singular traumatic event.

I proceeded to expand on that is the very reason why you do not get in a reputable trauma survivor’s face the wrong way or have any misconduct towards us because other than who has that in them to be as repugnant as possible in anyway aside from often times those who ignorantly do will be ripped a new one and rightfully so. Chances are we are a whole lot more sturdy than any average being. There is an expert and developer of the Forensic Interview Investigative Model known as “FETI.” It is a barefaced in the neurological and psychological findings of trauma survivors.

He put it like this when I saw him present at a Counter Human Trafficking Conference he used the example of taking a piece of paper tearing it into the smallest pieces scattering them into the air then instructing a participating delegate from law enforcement to piece it together for the usual “Who What When Where” construct in 5 minutes or less… impossible. The Gentleman looked at him dumbfounded and with registration that albeit traditional interview questions have been carried out like so that is NOT the way to address a traumatized person. His analogy was that is what occurs to the psyche, neuroscience, and psychology of trauma survivors. It’s the equivalent of tearing up paper and scattering it. This is why most law enforcement no longer use the archaic method of attempting to gain information from trauma survivors that have witnessed a ghastly crime, perpetrated by violence, an accident, etc or some other abnormal shocking incident or series of incidences. PTSD and CPTSD are normal healthy responses to abnormal occurrences. It’s not normal to witness murder, be beaten within an actual inch of life, Human Trafficked (Commercially Exploited), Raped, Female Genital Mutilated, Witness Mass Genocide in person, Acts of War in person, involved in a bloody accident, or anything extreme along those lines. Now most law are more along the lines of upon conducting an interview with trauma survivors involving crime it’s more about forget what you saw instead what did you hear, smell, feel? Needless to say the results have been much more fruitful than prior to the adoption of the FETI methodology. How this ties into what I was speaking on “The Horse Whisperer” keep in mind what is being encountered or seen in a person that is severely traumatized specifically the scenes entailing the horse post trauma and the how the Girl shifts drastically as a person after the incident. People in real life need to be mindful the scene of the gaping fresh wounds on the horse and exhibiting typical traumatized behavior that it is quite accurate allegorically speaking of post trauma. The scene I’m addressing most likely can’t be found on Youtube as it’s fairly grotesque but the gist is poignant. In real life it’s a shame people don’t have more consideration for trauma survivors than do but that is part of the ignorance that lingers in the world still to this day.

“There was a boy from the Blackfeet reservation, he used to do some work around here for a while. Sixteen, strong kid, good kid. He and I were really, really good friends. One day he went swimming and dove headfirst into the lake… and right into a rock. And it snapped his neck, paralyzed him. And after the accident I’d look in on him from time to time. But he wasn’t there. It was like his mind, his spirit, whatever you want to call it, just disappeared. The only thing left was just anger. Just sort of as if the… the boy I once knew just went somewhere else.” The Horse Whisperer
