The Killing Fields
The 1985 drama is a cinematic piece based upon the experiences of 2 journalists during the Cambodian Genocide of the 1970’s by Pol Pot’s regime. For survivors the few and far between it was even more godawful than the portrayal of the biopic. An estimated 3 Million people were mass murdered by the Khmer Rouge between Apr 17, 1975 — Jan 7, 1979.

It was a genocide that had no accountability, no Nurember Trials, nor condemnation by the very seats responsible for doing so in fact the Khmer Rouge the regime responsible for the mass killings had a seat at the United Nations long following the 3 year massacre that decimated over a quarter of Cambodia’s population. To this day over 5 million active land mines remain from the Khmer Rouge’s reign. Villagers frequently stumble across these mines thus causing death or dismemberment. A lingering reminder of the Khmer Rouge’s blood thirsty reign as a result Cambodia has one of the largest populations of amputees because of these millions of landmines.
